The |epiglottis| is a cartilaginous structure attached to the |larynx| which extends upward when the airway is open, but assists in occluding the tracheal entry during swallowing. It does this by dropping down slightly to meet the upraised |larynx|, forming a seal over the |larynx|. Occasionally, when eating rapidly, food or liquid ingested may enter the |larynx| before the |epiglottis| can shut off the opening. Such cases can be particularly dangerous, as the airway may become blocked, preventing ~air~ from being inhaled. This condition is further discussed in the |First Aid| section, under "Choking."
